I’m open to corrections if I’ve erred here. In a recent blog post, Thom Rainer, President and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources, said one of the common themes he has heard straetgic local church pastors over the past two years is the need for additional leadership training.
Some of the elements that made me uncomfortable in Money Matters, mainly regarding capital campaigns and a flippant approach to church debt, made its way to this book and there were other things I took issue with as well.

Mwlphurs Malphurs acknowledges in his text in a 4 Ibid. The steps are logically and practically aligned and while Malphurs in his introduction makes the disclaimer that this process is simply the most logical, the discovery of each aspect does not necessarily have to follow in his order. I will also recommend it to the seminary students I have the opportunity to mentor from time to time.
Revitalization should include an effort to become more biblical in issues of membership and church discipline, which Malphurs does not address. Beware it’s an investment requiring teamwork and positivity. To ask other readers questions about Advanced Strategic Planningplease sign up. But unfortunately, any leader can follow Malphurs process and likely generate some excitement and direction which they may use plznning produce some measure of productivity, but as this writer mentions and Barna among others assert, this is not the way in which God had historically lead his church.

Another great startegic of the book is the excellent balance between theology and practice — both the why and the how. One final strength I will note is that this book is up-to-date. Malphurs does not shy from presenting the need to be proactive in planning out our ministries and preparing to serve.
Malphurs does it again. I think there are better strategic planning books palnning there, I just haven’t read them. It also gives you the tools you need for strategic planning, including 14 appendices that can be easily modified for use in your local ministry setting. This book is a MUST for every pastor.

But, the area of leadership stratsgic the area I had received the least formal education, and was the area I, therefore, had the strongest passion for personal growth. I’ll be keeping this in my personal stash for years to come.
That is odd given his background and the range of churches with whom his consultancy has worked.
