The scene with the publisher’s agents, Tom and Susan, mlrvern hilarious. I also thought this was one of the few books I’ve read to take on class in a meaningful way; we sense the class divide between Morvern and her boyfriend and can speculate on how that motivated her decisions but it’s never spelled out in a didactic way.

You saw a girl with an awkward looking bottom but the face of an angel. I was actually surprised by how much I empathised with her.
What’s the first thing she does? It took me a while to figure out that greeting was crying, mortal was drunk, etc. I thought it was, overall, a great snapshot of working-class Scottish life, and I think I will find myself looking back with a fond thought to this odd little gem of a book.

Morvern Callar is a girl in a dead end job in a dead end Scottish remote seaport, whose relationship with a withdrawn muso novelist comes to a literal dead end. The watching the ants and burying a dismembered body of evidence scene. Morvern being alone makes sense to me that she does it laan. I’ll probably never show it to my students for fear they start adding “-ness” and “-ish” to everything, but it works in this novel.
