This gem was produced by George Harrison’s “Handmade Films” company. The “Ripping Yarns”, by contrast, were a series of programmes made for television, each only half-an-hour long, long enough to extract the necessary humour from their subjects but not so long that they outstayed their welcome. I would have thought that this films reputation would have sored to becoming a cult classic by this point. Explaining a joke ruins it and so I can’t give too many details about the plot. Sapper and Gerald Fairlie’s dashing hero ‘Hugh Drummond’ known to all and sundry as ‘Bulldog’ was just ripe for sending up.
To get the effect, try watching a tape of ”Benny Hill” at double speed. Two-dimensional cut out “special effects” bushes, cars, planes, battleship, submarine etc. There is nothing Pythonesque about this romp however.
These car chases and plane crashes will never fool the audience with their authenticity but their inventiveness will provide lots of entertainment. Captain Hugh ” Bullshot ” Crummond: Teutonic villain Otto Von Brunno and his evil mistress Lenya crash their plane in the English countryside and kidnap Professor Fenton, who has discovered a formula for making synthetic diamonds. He is likewise a British World War I officer who, in peacetime- the film is set in the thirties- has become a sort of private eye cum secret agent cum knight errant, as well as an Olympic athlete, racing driver and Wimbledon tennis champion.
Who needs a man’s crutch? It is dashedly funny. The Great Easter Egg Hunt. I feel it in my bweast.
But as the film unreels, Bullshot is played more as a buffoon than a genius. Global warfare is his answer to the world’s ills. You couldn’t put him down. I have seen many Bulldog Drummond episodes, and the original Ronald Coleman film. The jokes were basically making fun of all the plot problems and story failings in the Drummond novels. The scripg Shearman is here renamed Captain Hugh “Bullshot” Crummond, his nickname being a play on that of MacNeile’s original hero and on a vulgar expression which I would probably not be permitted to use on this site, but which translates as “the faeces of male cattle”.
The real Otto shows up, paralyzes Crummond with a fiendish ray and crams a stick of dynamite in Crummond’s mouth that will explode when the next person enters the room.

This movie got really bad reviews and I cannot understand why – it is quite possibly one of the best movies ever made. And even Brooks’s efforts could run out of steam at the end, as happened with the otherwise excellent “Blazing Saddles”. At least to this American critic. You’ll never be able to look at a chicken in quite the same way again. I’ve done pwetty well without bwains so far! Bullshot parody’s them down to the last detail.
