Though fairly large reportly about members at this timeMars Hill is not exactly like the typical suburban megachurch. From its basic structural foundations as a Ministry Matrix, all the way through to the present day, Mars Hill has an ongoing recognition and release of elders, and it does not lose sight of the DNA that drives the leadership – Missional Ministry.
Confessions of a Reformission Rev is an interesting book, didn’t take me too long to read less than a week of yet another mega-church in an American city, this time Seattle. We have all learned a lot since this book came out, but for the most part the ideas, and plans are still relevant to MHC as well as many other churches.
Though I may disagree with him on certain theological points, I found myself in agreement with the majority reformissiin what he said.
So we started running a nursery for small children during our service. God made kids to grow cofnessions and move out of the house and have their own families, but somehow we expect Christians to remain spiritual children to some leader and his vision and agenda for their entire lives. I wonder, though, how long his message will be heard as long as it is wrapped in a sometimes vulgar, always sarcastic, package.
We needed couples like this to help the church survive, not jump ship just because my wife could not drop everything to take this woman out to tea whenever was convenient for her.
I regularly listen to Driscoll’s podcasted sermons, and his voice was very clear as I read this book. Second, God had spoken to me in one of those weird charismatic moments and told me to start a church. Churches are wise to choose change strategically rather than reactively. I highly recommend this book.
It is a fascinating story of the beginning of a church that started out small and grew very confessinos. Well, actually, I think I know some of the reasons why this happens; that was a rhetorical remark.
With engaging humor, humility, and candor, Driscoll shares the failures, frustrations, and just plain messiness of trying to build a church that is faithful to the gospel of Christ in a highly post-Christian culture.
