The main plot centers on Cousin Bette’s revenge ebtte her family; however, all the stories which make up the novel are imbued by obsessions which drive the narrative to its dark end. The Cousin Bette of the title is an overlooked and resentful poor relation to the novel’s central family. Just went on a bit too much for me and the unrepentant Baron Hulot was almost undigestable.

It is a shame to give only 3 stars to a book so eloquently written, but what will linger in my mind about Cousin Bette 30 years from now will most likely be the rotten bapzac it has left in my bettee, not the honey-dipped words. Poor, plain spinster Bette is compelled to survive on the condescending patronage of her socially superior relatives in Paris: Balzac had written more than seventy novels when he began La Cousine Betteand populated them with recurring characters.
