Those who are familiar with it will find themselves revisited by overwhelming claustrophobia in places, reliving the Vatican’s removal of any and ultino air, fresh or otherwise. But I will still recommend this piece to everyone who has an appetite for biblical mysteries, or plain mystery for that matter. Matilde Asensi born in Alicante, Spain is a Spanish journalist and writer, who specializes mainly in historical thrillers.

Jun 28, Harriet rated it really liked it. The author allows the reader to experience a literary game played out with Dante’s Purgatorio as the rule book and travel guide.

The Last Cato (Catón, #1) by Matilde Asensi

It’s neither a proper historical thriller nor a very good crime novel. I was a bit turned off when the main character, a nun, falls in love. There have already been several rather lousy works based on Dante’s Inferno, and this adds to that list.

Overall, I found this to be a B-level thriller, not on a level with The DaVinci Code, in which interest was better sustained for the duration. The only questions remaining are why the secret cult is gathering the Cross remnants and what motivates Captain Kaspar Glauser-Royst. If perchance you are looking for an excellent plus religious thriller I would highly reccomend The Book of Q by Jonathan Rabb!! El final es simplemente excepcional.

An Ethiopian man is found dead and his body has been scarified. This book is along the lines of the DaVinci Code. No trivia or quizzes yet. Still, it was an entertaining, enjoyable read, and would probably make good summer fare. However, it’s symptomatic that Brown has millions of readers all over the world and Asensi is virtually unkonwn outside Spain or the Iberian Peninsula.

Paperbackpages. Holy relics are disappearing from sacred spots around the world—and the Vatican will do whatever it takes to stop the thieves f A masterful blend of Christian scholarship and thrilling adventure, The Last Cato is a novel about the race to find the secret location of the Vera Cruz, the True Cross on which Christ was crucified, and the ancient brotherhood sworn to protect it. Given only the sparest of details about the events surrounding the Ethiopian man’s death, Ottavia is ordered to discover the origins of and meaning behind the strange tattoos.

Return to Book Page. Lots of historic facts “hammered” into the story, lots of humoristic attempts that didn’t work for me, all of this in a first person narrative, namely Ottavia, who never convinced me as a character – as well as Farag “too good to be true” Boswell.

Other books in the series. While these kinds of conceits frequently produce adventure and action at the expense of interesting characterization, Asensi’s characters evolve as interesting and complex human beings.

I loved the premise of this book and a mythical order of the Cahon who protect the True cross over the centuries. I didn’t aspire to all that; I was simply content to wear some simple pants Un libro de aventuras en el que los protagonistas dejan a Indiana Jones como un “mindungui”, jejeje.

El Ultimo Caton

The Last Cato also happens to be an intelligent critique of the Roman Curia as well as a lively This book is a delightful historical fantasy. El final me ha gustado, mucho. Refresh and try again.

The Vatican high command clearly riven by some factionalism is scared by the rapid progress the nun makes and takes her off the case, only to reassign her when they find that precious relics and crosses related to the prior investigation are disappearing from various churches around the world. I learned a lot about the early Christian Church through this book and so I liked the historical aspect.

Ok ok ok I enjoyed this book much more than my rating would indicate. To ask other readers questions about The Last Catoplease sign up. Given only the sparest of details about the events surrounding the Ethiopian man’s death, Ottav Sister Ottavia Salina is a doctor of paleography, the director of the Vatican’s Classified Archives, and a member of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Vatican nun, papal guard, Middle Eastern man search secret sect. One of the Staurofilakes’ most prominent members was Dante Alighieri, and Ottavia and her team soon realize that Dante hid secrets about the Staurofilakes in the text of ‘The Divine Comedy,’ his greatest work. She specializes in ancient manuscripts and research, and therefore she’s stunned when her superiors need her expertise in a new assignment – identifying unusual tattoos on the corpse of a dead Ethiopian.

There’s a nun working in the Vatican archives and there’s a Swiss Guard and a Coptic polyglot archaeologist, and the three of them are tasked with the investigation into a dead body found decorated with strange symbols and crosses. Jan 27, Vaso rated it it was amazing. Apr 26, M M rated it did not like it. Some tenuous connection then derives to Dante’s Purgatory, and the three are forced to start decoding instructions hidden in the book to find an earthly paradise, where, they suspect, the criminals came from.

Una lectura muy recomendada. Apr 19, tara rated it it was ok. To complicate things more, the dead man was carrying along bits of the True Cross – the one Jesus died upon – and bears scarification that suggests a long-lost religious asenai may not be lost after all. I gave this a three star because of a very weak translation.

El Ultimo Caton : Matilde Asensi :

I am not going to lie though The story revolves around the search for the True Cross that Jesus Christ was crucified on. En algunas ocasiones te llevas sorpresas muy agradables, esta fue una de ellas.

The settings are detailed and richly drawn. It isn’t long before the trio discovers that the strange tattoos of crosses and Greek letters link the corpse to the Staurofilakes, a secret brotherhood dedicated to protecting the “True Cross,” the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.
