Courtenay is opposed in his work by agents and saboteurs both from a rival ad agency, Taunton Associates, and the Consies. He is not only fighting the rival agency, but also the so-called Consies — those people in the mecrhants who believe in conservation of our natural resources, and, by extension, the resources of the rest of the planetary system too.

As a young man, Pohl worked for an advertising agency, and the experience left him with both an insider’s understanding of, and a profound distaste for, psychological manipulation for profit, hucksterism, and the whole mentality of material consumption for its own sake.
