Her books are set ack in time but the issues are still relevant and you can very well relate to them. In this book, the way she uses the Bakula flower to convey such intense emotions is nothing if not beautiful.
Read it and do tell me how you felt about it. The ideologies, the family rivalry, the typical mother-in-law and sister-in-law vs daughter-in-law enmity, the misconceptions about educational qualifications, and the practices surrounding marriage and match making are all very familiar.
Shrikant I had a very low opinion of right from the start, while Shrimati I fallz increasingly frustrated with as the story progressed. I loved it from Line one. The pressure and rage inside srimati intensified. They are not a great literary treat but her story telling is simply riveting. I’d heard of the ‘Dollar Bahu’ by Sudha Murty, and when I chanced upon this small book, I decided to go ahead with it.
She realizes that there is no more love, affection and meaning to their relations. I loved the book too Like Liked by 3 people.

This is story to two different individuals Shrikant and Shrimati Deshpande. An emotional family drama- stay away if you are allergic them: The story is simple, follows a single plot and focuses on the two main characters only. But the end of the book is probably something that the Indian women can never think of. Women according to Indian traditions and so to say many other world cultures are supposed to stay at home ,cook and take care of the family willingly or unwillingly.
It will not be incorrect to say that the book is mainly about Shrimati, her life, her choice and her decisions than about Shrikant. I liked the book as it highlights the little joys that we miss out daily running the regular routine.

The only common thing between them is the Bakula tree which stands in the space between the two houses. Way too familiar now, you find such stories everywhere around you, the ambitions- sacrificed in the name of family, the discontent at not being able spend more time together but I must congratulate Sudha Murthy for writing this some thirty yea Gently Falls The Bakula- a story about a lower-middle class girl and a boy from a sleepy southern town of Hubli who fall in love and how the man’s career takes precedence over everything else.

They both have very different approach towards life. I even tried writing what could’ve happened after Shrimati’s departure. In the pursuit of life, they lost themselves. Of non-acknowledgement of silent support. Though here we sympathize with Shrimati a lot than Srikant, I felt bbakula she is also responsible for his change in behavior. And then came the time to put an end to this torture. I have always been very fond of keeping plants at home.
You would think that she would divert her attention to other things right?
