The war, the political dictatorship, the freezing, miserable months in trenches on the islands, the self-serving, brutal commanders, the guilt, the horror, the death, the final loss—all these skulk silently in the background. Page after page of grandiose virtual battle scenes that had no purpose to the plot, and was literally just the character playing a video game and suffering a minutely described migraine.

I thought that I would find this interesting – it was awful. Long and verbose—over five hundred pages, even after one hundred pages were cut from the original— The Islands sometimes buckles under its own weight of ideas and originality. But where is the English listing on Goodreads. I quit pages in, when I got into the ridiculous battle scenes. No lqs or quizzes yet.

By the way, the entire book is written in a style of unnecessary detail, as every object and event is written with insane detail.

Its satirical, labyrinthine prose may be its obvious selling point, but it is the shattering and czrlos descriptions of war, post-traumatic stress disorder, memory and redemption that lift The Islands from madcap writing experiment to dramatic literary victory.
