Yes, you read that correctly. The best and worst feature is that 3 story arcs make of this novel something shadoqs a never-ending story. Soon Alec is traveling roads he never knew existed, toward a war he never suspected was brewing. But fortune is as unpredictable as Alec’s new mentor, and this time there just might be And I can’t wait to continue with the series.

The recipe is simple, naive and utterly fun -Seregil, a gentleman cum rake with a secret identity, Alec, a confused country lad coming of age and getting ensnared in the twists and plots of the big city, romance the kind you rarely saw in them times but When Lynn wrote Luck in the Shadows back in the 90s, she started one of my favorite fantasy series. I think some of the less important scenes could have been skimmed over more and replaced by more action.
Funny how ‘cockerel’ and ‘quay’ are pronounced by the American narrator! To read a book where these things are not gingerly approached and kept on the sidelines, but thrown directly in there, and done so expertly, without making the story about it. Too much setting description for me. Though this is not a kind of literature that begs the reader to develop grand theories of metaphor and symbolism, I would urge anyone looking for a good adventure with engaging characters to purchase this text and the ones that follow.

Alec is hesitant, but Seregil convinces him with tales of magic, dragons, adventures and riches. I have trudged through other books where the reader was an obstacle, but this one was the worst. Sexuality is fluid, politics is everything, and outcasts are the tastemakers. When I think about it, this kind of fantasy almost never works with me. Teetering on a dagger’s edge between duty and high treason, Freyrik discovers that some choices can change a life, and some an entire world.
I’m started on the second volume and so far in the two stories the only overt sexuality is heterosexual. For fantasy fans this really is a must read, especially those who like high fantasy.
